This project transforms a typical Victorian terrace house in Clapham (London), addressing the challenges of its original design: a fragmented floorplan with small, dark rooms connected by a long, narrow corridor. The original house is restructured with an intervention that weaves a new story into its historic framework.
At the heart of the project is a bespoke architectural element—a single, continuous feature that shifts in function as it moves through the house and into the garden. It morphs from a closet to a table, a TV stand, a garden bench, and a kitchen counter, its width and curves introducing a playful rhythm that counters the monotony of the original corridor.
The extension, built on the former side garden—a neglected and residual space—introduces natural light through strategically placed skylights. This infusion of daylight transforms the once-dark interior into an open and inviting floorplan that now hosts the kitchen and living areas.
To honor the home’s history, bricks from the demolished interior walls are reused for the new extension. Left exposed on the exterior and with a thin layer of paint inside, these recycled bricks make the layers of history visible. The project juxtaposes old and new, light and shadow, and fragmentation and openness, crafting a home that bridges the past and present while embracing sustainable, circular design principles.
